On July 8, 1851, Friedrich Karl Lüscher founded a trading company for medical dressings in Frankfurt, laying the foundation for what Lohmann is today: a global technology partner for innovative adhesive solutions in intelligent applications.
A Tradition of Transformation
Since its founding, Lohmann has continuously evolved. Technological advances, new markets, and changing customer requirements have repeatedly challenged the company to rethink established approaches and develop new solutions.
For Dr. Jörg Pohlman, CEO and a descendant of the founding family, who leads the company together with COO/CTO Dr. Carsten Herzhoff, this ability to adapt has always been one of Lohmann's greatest strengths.
"Remaining successful for 175 years is anything but a given. Building such a legacy requires curiosity, courage, and the willingness to reinvent yourself time and again. But above all, it requires people who do not simply follow change – they drive it. It is the commitment, innovative spirit, and collaboration of our employees that have enabled Lohmann to grow through every challenge. That same spirit gives me great confidence in our future," says Dr. Jörg Pohlman.
From a Trading Company to Smart Bonding
With August Lohmann, Johann Bömper's brother-in-law, joining the company as a partner in 1868, the name that would define the company from 1929 onward appeared for the first time. Shortly thereafter, Lohmann began building an entirely new business area, evolving from a trading company into a manufacturer of medical wound care products. This business later gave rise to, among others, LTS – Lohmann Therapie-Systeme – and, in 1998, the joint venture Lohmann & Rauscher.
Following its founding in Frankfurt, the company relocated first to Godesberg and later, in 1899, to Fahr (Neuwied), where Lohmann's headquarters remain to this day.
Yet it was not only the company's location that changed. Throughout its history, Lohmann has continuously reinvented itself. Through every transformation, one thing has remained constant: the people whose knowledge, dedication, and sense of responsibility have shaped the company for generations – and continue to do so today.
That evolution is reflected in Lohmann's portfolio, which supports customers across the entire value chain – from material and solution development to engineering, process integration, and manufacturing at scale. Through Smart Bonding, Lohmann combines material expertise, process know-how, and a deep understanding of industrial manufacturing to create integrated solutions.
For Dr. Jörg Pohlman, the company's history is about far more than looking back.
"Our history demonstrates that lasting success is achieved when experience, innovation, and strong partnerships come together. That is exactly the foundation on which we will continue to build our future – together with our employees and our customers."
Building the Future on Experience
Over the past 175 years, Lohmann has faced many challenges. Time and again, however, it has been the company's ability to adapt that has made it stronger.
"When we look back at Lohmann's history, one thing becomes clear: every generation has faced its own challenges, and every generation has helped overcome them while building something that has endured across generations through passion and dedication," says Dr. Carsten Herzhoff. "That experience gives me confidence. I am convinced that we will continue to shape our future together and further strengthen Lohmann in the years to come."
With this mindset, Lohmann will continue to embrace change as an opportunity, shape the future, and create intelligent connections—between people, ideas, and technologies.
