Lohmann has reached another important milestone on its sustainability journey: the successful completion of the “Going Green” project at the Neuwied site. Developed in close collaboration with the WZL Institute of RWTH Aachen University, the initiative lays the foundation for a more climate-conscious, forward-looking site strategy.

Over the course of several months, an interdisciplinary team led by Reinhold Domanski collected and analyzed data, developed alternative future scenarios, and ultimately defined a detailed action plan for a more sustainable site design. Despite complex site conditions and the need to address infrastructure, production technology, and material flows holistically, the project was completed with impressive results.

A Vision for the “Green Site” of Tomorrow

“Going Green” was launched to align Lohmann’s Neuwied (and Koblenz) operations with the company’s broader sustainability vision. Key areas of focus included:

  • Reducing CO₂ emissions by transitioning to low-impact processes

  • Expanding the use of dry coating technologies

  • Simplifying value streams

  • Strengthening the integration of production and logistics across sites

The outcome: a clearly defined future scenario that will guide site-specific planning and long-term transformation. The goal is to secure high-quality jobs, reduce environmental impact, and build a strong, resilient foundation for future generations – all within a culture of responsibility, collaboration, and innovation.

Collaboration in Action

The project brought together representatives from Production, R&D, Sales, Purchasing and Process Technology, forming a strong interdisciplinary core team. Guided by a steering committee and supported by topic-specific working groups, the collaboration with WZL proved key to success.

The final results were presented in early 2024 – a testament to what is possible when deep technical expertise and a shared commitment to sustainability come together.
