Climate Action Commitment - Lohmann GmbH & Co. KG joins Science Based Targets Initiative

After signing with the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) in 2022 to align with the Paris Agreement, the company takes the next step in further mitigating and adapting to climate change.

In February 2025, Lohmann GmbH & Co. KG has officially committed to set near- and long-term company-wide emission reductions in line with science-based net-zero with the SBTi.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organization, that partners with organizations such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), UNGC, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to enable companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis. The SBTi develops standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at latest.

A logical next step after the Climate Ambition Accelerator-Program

This step comes logical to Lohmann having taken part in the six-month Climate Ambition Accelerator in 2024, a program for signatories of the UN Global Compact to set science-based CO2-reduction targets that are in line with the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement and take the path toward a net-zero future. "The peer-to-peer approach of the Climate Ambition Accelerator, with such diverse companies cross-industry, gave us valuable insights into the various approaches to corporate climate mitigation and adaption”, Oliver Sombrey, Sustainability Manager at Lohmann, resumes.

Aligning Lohmann’s Climate Action Goals and Measures with SBTi-Standards

Following the guidelines of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), Lohmann has revised its historical emissions data, aligning its records with new tools for carbon accounting. "By standardizing our tools and methodologies, we aim to exceed the required precision to establish a dependable baseline that mirrors the latest in climate science," explains Katharina Candia, Head of Sustainability at Lohmann. The firm is diligently working to meet the Paris Agreement’s ambitious 1.5°C goal, continually refining its emission reduction targets and exploring practical scenarios to achieve these objectives. By joining SBTi, Lohmann is setting near- and long-term targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the latest climate science findings.

Lohmann will be collaborating with relevant departments to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of its proposed emission reduction strategies, ensuring the sustainability measures are both viable and effective. In the next stages, Lohmann will finalize its emission reduction targets and compile all necessary documentation for a comprehensive submission to the SBTi for validation. "Our efforts go beyond mere regulatory compliance; they are central to our mission to cultivate our business model," adds Candia.
