Last Saturday, the regional “Jugend forscht” (www.jugend-forscht) competition for Andernach/Neuwied took place at Lohmann’s TEC Center in Neuwied. Once again, it became clear just how much innovative potential exists in our region.
From biotechnology and sustainable energy solutions to astrophysical experiments, the range of projects presented to the jury and visitors was truly impressive.
Just two examples amplyfying this: Chiara Heger and Inga Rondot (6th grade) from Martinus-Gymnasium in Linz am Rhein developed an “insulin chocolate” concept, exploring the possibility of delivering insulin via the oral mucosa. Their innovative approach earned them first place in their category.
Sixteen-year-old Etienne-Andrée Müller from the School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Neuwied investigated bat behavior using specialized acoustic technology and received an award in the field of biology.
Other participants worked on measuring cosmic radiation with a self-built detector or explored solar modules supporting Flettner rotors for reduced-emission ship propulsion. Additional projects addressed flood protection, climate action in schools, food analysis, and innovative materials — alongside practical ideas such as healthier confectionery, nutritious ice cream, and handmade lip care products.
This year’s competition carried special significance: Lohmann is celebrating its 175th anniversary and has supported “Jugend forscht” as a regional partner for 50 years. Katja Hartwig from Stiftung Jugend forscht e. V., who traveled from Hamburg to attend the event, highlighted this long-standing partnership in her remarks.
Neuwied’s Mayor, Peter Jung, also attended and praised the achievements and dedication of the young researchers.
“‘Jugend forscht’ brings together our own innovation-driven company history and the research spirit of the next generation,” said Dr. Carsten L. Herzhoff, MBA, COO/CTO of Lohmann. “Especially in our anniversary year, we are proud to welcome so many talented young innovators. It is inspiring to see the scientific rigor, technical expertise, and professionalism demonstrated even by very young students. We congratulate all award winners and wish them every success at the state competition in April.”
